Glenn Maxwell bid: The previous edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) was one of the most fascinating editions. Though we saw multiple heroic knocks, there were some failures as well. One of the biggest names to fail during the last season was KXIP's “big show”. However, the rookie all-rounder Glenn Maxwell was in sublime form during India’s tour of Australia, consisting of three ODIs (won 2-1 by AUS), thee T20Is (won 2-1 by IND), and four Tests (won 2-1 by IND). Maxwell has played the T20I and ODI leg and played some scintillating knocks during the recently concluded series.
On Thursday, the eight IPL franchises have released their list of released and retained players for the upcoming 14th edition of the IPL 2021 which is set to be held between April and June in India. During the IPL retention, Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) has let go of the Australian cricketer.
Former Indian cricket icon Virender Sehwag also remarks on Maxwell during IPL 2020. Sehwag said ''This 10 crore cheerleader proved very costly for Punjab. His IPL routine for the last few years has been of shirking from work but this season he broke that record as well. This is what you call a highly paid vacation,” Sehwag said of Maxwell in an episode of his YouTube show ‘Viru ki Baithak’.
Interestingly, in IPL 2020, he was unable to hit a single 'Six' as the Kings XI Punjab suffered most because of his poor-run form. Maxwell has played 82 IPL matches so far and has impressive numbers. The Aussie middle-order batsman has struck the ball at an impressive 154.69. He has scored 1505 runs with the highest score of 95.
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB)
RCB has released a veteran player Aaron Finch. This creates a vacant slot in the top order as Finch is a premier opener in the shortest format. So, the swashbuckling all-rounder could be a great asset for Kohli's Men in Red. Maxwell can provide the alternative option of opening with the ball as well. With Maxwell, Royal Challengers' batting order looks solid as they have already empowered the duo of Kohli and de Villiers. Thus, RCB can opt for Glenn Maxwell in the upcoming IPL auction.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)
Maxwell could fill the void left by some young lads as he can open the innings for the two-time IPL champions KKR. Apart from that, Maxwell has possessed power-hitting abilities with a brisk rate that enable him to become one of the top picks for the teams in the upcoming season. It looks like the Kolkata Knight Riders can use Maxwell as their most valuable asset if they wish to include him in the squad.
Imagine a team comprising Russell, Morgan, Gill, and Maxwell. For a team that couldn't qualify for the playoffs, Maxwell could be their savior. Now, as the teams are aiming for perfection, by including quality all-rounders, Maxwell is the best option for Knight Riders. So, Maxwell’s brutal ball-striking ability could help him to grab a contract with Morgan and Co.
Delhi Capitals (DC)
IPL 2020 was a historic one as it witnessed the rise of the Delhi Capitals (DC) as a strong side. Even though they fluctuate at the latter half of the tournament, they had the ruthless pace attack that destroyed any opposition. Barring this, they also gunned with some big names like Stoinis, Dhawan, and Pant. The Delhi-based franchise made it to the finals though. However, a small total was never enough against the strongest side as Mumbai's batting lineup gave no chance of a comeback for Shreyas-led side.
Interestingly, The Australian star all-rounder was once a part of the Delhi team. Maxwell’s inclusion in the squad might pave the way for a perfect homecoming. As they heavily depend on R Ashwin to bowl during the powerplay, Maxwell’s off-spinners could be used as an alternative option. Therefore, the Capitals might look forward to including Glenn Maxwell in their squad.
