ENG vs IND series, Dominic Cork on Shubman Gill: Former England right-arm pacer Dominic Cork reveals that England speedsters will have to sweat hard to get the wicket of India's emerging batsman Shubman Gill for the upcoming Test series, beginning from Friday (February 5) in Chennai. Cork reckons even though England is coming on the back of a whitewash against interim Sri Lanka, the tourists will not be able to seal the 4-match Test series against India as it wouldn't be an easy task for Root and co.
The rookie right-handed batsman Shubman Gill makes his Test debut on Boxing Day of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and has not looked back ever since. He along with wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant played a pivotal role in India's historic win in the four-match Test series against Australia last month.
Gill has played just three Tests and scored 259 runs at a healthy average of 51.80 with two half-tons under his name. Having added two fifty-plus partnerships with Rohit Sharma, the duo is likely to open the batting for India in the upcoming Test series against England as well. The opening Test (IND vs ENG) will be played from Friday, while the second is set to commence from Feb 13.
“We need to put two younger players into the Indian side. Shubman Gill, who Scott Styris has been banging the drum about Shubman Gill, but what a performance against Australia. He’s obviously a talented cricketer, so I am going to pick him,” said Cork on Star Sports show.
“Even though Rishabh Pant, I think he’s got a major force to play in this series, especially with those superb innings in the last Test match to win the series against Australia, but for me, I am just gonna go the way Scott Styris wants everybody to go, is Shubman Gill, because he is such a superb young player and England will find it tough to get him out,” said Cork.
“I think India will win the series. I think England are in a better place now. England just beating Sri Lanka will help and having the likes of Stokes, Archer and Burns back in the squad will help but I still think that India are too strong and will win the series,” he added.
Team India squad for first two Tests: Virat Kohli (Captain), Rohit Sharma, Mayank Agarwal, Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane (Vice-captain), KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant, Wriddhiman Saha, R Ashwin, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Ishant Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur
