''Captain Cool'' Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Saturday became the first captain in Indian Premier League(IPL) history to win 100 matches after CSK defeating the defending champions Mumbai Indians by 5 wickets in the opening match of IPL 2020 in Abu Dhabi yestertday. Chennai Super Kings had lost 5 games in a row against their old arch-rivals Mumbai Indians yesterday. MS Dhoni scripts history with 100 wins as CSK's skipper. Mahender Singh Dhoni grabs 100 catches in IPL (96 as keeper and 4 as fielder) - 100th IPL win as CSK captain. MS Dhoni now has 250 dismissals as a wicketkeeper in T20 cricket which is a record.
Chennai Super Kings won the toss and invited Mumbai Indians to bat first. MI skipper ''Hitman'' Rohit sharma and Quin De Kock started the innings for MI.Apart from Sourav Tiwary ( 42 runs in 31 balls), no Mumbai Indians player could cross the 20 runs mark. Mumbai Indians managed to set a target of 163 runs to Chennai Super Kings. While chasing a target of 163 against the defending champions Mumbai Indians, MS Dhoni promotes Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran ahead of itself. England star all-rounder Curran played a cameo of 18 of just 6 balls with 2 sixes which helped CSK to much closer to the set target by MI. Ambati Rayudu scores a brilliant half-century with Faf du Plessis in a 115 runs stand for CSK. Ambati Rayudu played a match-winning knock of 71 while Du Plessis scored an unbeaten 58. Finally, Faf du Plessis and Dhoni took home CSK to a five-wicket victory in this marquee encounter against Rohit Sarma's MI.
"We may practice enough but when you go on the field you need to assess the conditions and give it your best. It took us time for the bowlers to find the right length on this pitch. Plenty of positives but still plenty of areas for us to improve," Dhoni said after the match. MS Dhoni is also the first captain to win 100 games for a franchise in the famous league of Fantasy Cricket.
Dhoni returned to the cricket field after a long wait of 437 days as he last played a match during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 against New Zealand in the semifinals of the 50-over tournament in the mid of July last year. India loses this match. However, CSK skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni announced his retirement from international cricket on 15 August 2020 on the day of India's 74th independence Day with other CSK partner Suresh Raina.
CSK will next lock horns with Rajasthan Royals on on September 22 , while Mumbai Indians will take on Kolkata Knight Riders on September 23.
