Dhoni and co will be looking to rebuild their squad, add some quality and depth to it in the upcoming mini-player auction ahead of IPL 2021. A CSK official said that Suresh Raina is in the team's plans for the next season, however, Raina's fate lies in the hands of Super Kings skipper MS Dhoni. The official confirmed that the chances of CSK retaining Raina are approx. 60-40.

After registering a disappointing 7th-place finish in IPL 2020 points table, CSK are expected to release some key players from their squad to make way for some young Indian talented players. Meanwhile, All eight teams have been asked to release their final retention list by January 20.

Suresh Raina has travelled to United Arab Emirates (UAE) with the rest of the Chennai Super Kings squad last year but pulled out of the tournament ahead of the start of the last season due to some personal reasons. The nature of veteran Raina's departure has irked the franchise hierarchy, although CSK chief N Srinivasan chose to be considerate.

Chennai Super Kings are all set to release the veteran spinner Piyush Chawala and batsman Murali Vijay. Vijay has been roped in the CSK squad since 2018, Chawla has joined them in 2019. Moreover, Chawala was CSK's most expensive buy at Rs 6.75 cr in the player auction in 2019. But the leggy has played 7 games for the side and claimed just 6 scalps. CSK have the lowest remaining balance in the purse at the moment i.e.  Rs 15 lakh.

CSK are all certain to release Vijay as per reports. The right-hand rookie batsman has also failed to fire ever since rejoining the side back in 2018. Vijay was given three chances to prove himself matches to prove himself last season but he scored a mere 32 and eventually dropped from the side before Ruturaj Gaikwad came in the side in the opening slot.

Apart from Piyush Chawla and Murali Vijay, CSK might also release Kedar Jadhav ahead of the new season. In Jadhav's case as well, the franchise will speak to their captain MS Dhoni before taking a call on releasing the batsman who had terrible batting performance in IPL 2020, scoring only 62 runs in 8 matches with a low strike rate.
