IND - 257/6 (Rishabh Pant 91, Pujara 73; Sundar 33* Dom Bess 4/55)

The opening Test between India and England is being played at Chepauk Stadium in Chennai. The day started with the last two England wickets adding 23 more runs to their overnight total. Chasing ENG's mammoth 578, India lost wickets at regular intervals. Rishabh Pant continues his good form and amassed counter-attacked (91) to keep England in check. His battle with Jack Leach was one of the highlights of the day. At Stumps on Day 3, India are 257 for 6. Sundar remains unbeaten on 33 while Ashwin gives full support from another end.

Meanwhile, Joe Root-led England still has 321 runs in the bank and needs only four more wickets to bowl India out in the first innings. Dom Bess was the pick of the English bowlers, grabbed four wickets including Kohli and Rahane. Ruthless Archer has also impressed and picked a couple of wickets up front.

Earlier on the day, Rohit Sharma (6) and Shubman Gill (29) failed to get going as they were dismissed by Jofra Archer after England posted a mammoth 578. Pujara and Kohli brought some calmness after lunch but were too defensive and that led to the wickets of the skipper Kohli and vice-captain Rahane.

India's new-wall Cheteshwar Pujara played another gritty knock (73 off 143) and added a decent 119-run stand for the fifth wicket. But falls on an unusual dismissal as his pull shot rebounding off the short leg fielder straight to Rory Burns at short mid-wicket region.

Moreover, the visitors added 23 runs to their overnight total to reach 578 in the first innings. England skipper Joe Root notched his fifth double-ton (218 off 377) to became the first player to score a double century in his 100th Test. For India, Jaspreet Bumrah and Ashwin picked three wickets while Nadeem and Ishant took a piece.
