Earlier on the day, Rohit Sharma (6) and Shubman Gill (29) failed to get going as they were dismissed by Jofra Archer after England posted a mammoth 578. Pujara and Kohli brought some calmness after lunch but were too defensive and that led to the wickets of the skipper Kohli and vice-captain Rahane.
India's new-wall Cheteshwar Pujara played another gritty knock (73 off 143) and added a decent 119-run stand for the fifth wicket. But falls on an unusual dismissal as his pull shot rebounding off the short leg fielder straight to Rory Burns at short mid-wicket region.
Moreover, the visitors added 23 runs to their overnight total to reach 578 in the first innings. England skipper Joe Root notched his fifth double-ton (218 off 377) to became the first player to score a double century in his 100th Test. For India, Jaspreet Bumrah and Ashwin picked three wickets while Nadeem and Ishant took a piece.
