Indian Premier League IPL 2021 Auction: While all the talk is around Glenn Maxwell, Steve Smith, Shakib Al Hasan among others, the two-time IPL winners' attention is on promising England's batsman Dawid Malan. The 33-year-old Malan is currently holding his top spot in the ICC Men's T20 batsman rankings with 915 rating points and has all the potential of being the next big prospect at the IPL 2021 auctions, kick-start in Chennai from tomorrow onwards.
The English top-order southpaw, meanwhile, is yet to make his IPL debut and has registered himself in the auction at a base price of INR 1.5 crores. The auction is set to take place on Thursday (February 18) in Chennai. The IPL 2021 will witness 292 players (164 Indian, 125 overseas, and 3 associate) going under the hammer, with certain players already on the list of all eight franchises.
Aakash Chopra, the former Indian cricketer also wants the KKR to go for the Englishman. Cricket fans also urge Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), the 2012 and 2014 champions, to go for the World's No. 1-ranked T20 batsman for the upcoming season when at the IPL 2021 auction.
Earlier, in an interview, David Malan mentioned that being at the top of the rankings doesn’t guarantee one a spot in the national side. Malan reckons that being atop the rankings only means more pressure on a player to perform.
“KKR have Tim Seifert as an option to open with Shubman Gill. But they could look towards Dawid Malan. With Morgan as the captain, I think they will have a greater interest in Dawid Malan. They have Rahul Tripathi and Nitish Rana has also opened a few times,” Chopra was quoted as saying on his official YouTube channel.
“It is something I will probably enjoy more when I have retired. It is not something I am really looking at right now. It doesn’t guarantee runs, it doesn’t guarantee you a spot in the team. It’s something that, the day I retire, I will look back on it with fond memories,” said Malan.
