India vs Australia 2nd Test: India overpowered Australia by 8 wickets in the second Test played at MCG to level the four-match Test series by 1-1. Team India skipper Ajinkya Rahane gives full credit to the duos Shubman Gill and Mohammad Siraj in India's clinical triumph over the hosts. Rahane also commending the astounding character shown by his side to turn it around in the second Test for a series-leveling victory over Australia in Melbourne.

Debutant Shubman Gill scored 45 and 35* in the match while Mohammad Siraj has returned with five wickets, including three in Australia's second innings. The Indian captain refused to take credit for his Man of the Match award in the second Test. By hitting the winning run to snatch the victory on Tuesday, the Indian skipper immediately pointed at the brilliant show put on by the whole team.

Meanwhile, the Indian team management made few changes to their playing XI for the second Test match at MCG. Young opener Shubman Gill and Mohammad Siraj made their Test debut while Ravindra Jadeja and Rishabh Pant also came in India's playing XI.

Stand-in Captain Ajinkya Rahane lead Team India from the front in the crucial triumph over Australia. Rahane has also named 'Player of the Match' for his heroic knock of 112 off 223 balls studded with 12 boundaries in the first innings which helped India to post a par-total of 326. Rahane also bagged the Mullagh Medal which has been named in honour of trailblazing Indigenous cricketer Johnny Mullagh (Unaarrimin).

After the debacle in Adelaide where they were bowled out for a paltry 36 runs, India brought in Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja into the team while handing debuts to Mohammed Siraj and Shubman Gill. It worked nicely for the Indian team as both Gill and Siraj made the most of the opportunities given to them as they impressed with their performances in the Melbourne Test.

Rahane said in the post-match presentation, “Really proud of all the players. Played really well. Want to give credit to the debutants (Mohammed) Siraj and (Shubman) Gill, the character they showed after the Adelaide loss was great to see.”

“Shubman, we all know his first-class career and in this game, he has shown the intent to play shots at this level. Has shown composure. Siraj has shown that he can bowl with discipline. It’s really difficult for debutants to bowl with discipline but that’s where I think the first-class experience comes in handy,” he pointed. Character was important for us, especially after losing Umesh in the second innings. That (five-bowler plan) worked well for us nicely. We were thinking of having an all-rounder and Jadeja has been brilliant for us,'' he said.

Rahane also confirmed that Rohit Sharma is set to join the team for the third Test, he didn’t say much on Umesh’s injury. “Umesh is recovering well, management and medical staff will take the call. We’re excited about Rohit coming back. Spoke to him yesterday, he’s waiting to join the team,” he further added.

The third Test between India and Australia to be played at Sydney Cricket Ground on December 7, 2021, at 5 AM IST.
